Labradoodle Coat Colours
Parti, Phantom, Merle?  What does it all mean?
What is a PHANTOM labradoodle coat?

Phantom colored dogs have a solid base color with sharply defined markings of a
second color appearing above each eye, on the sides of the muzzle, on the throat/
forechest, on all four legs and feet, and below the tail. Any combination of acceptable
colors is allowed. Nose pigment should follow requirements listed above based on
the solid base color.

K locus alleles determine the colouring pattern of a dog's coat.  E locus alleles
determine whether an animal expresses a mask or grizzle pattern.  A locus alleles
determine whether an animal expresses an agouti appearance.

Phantom markings must have a ky/ky genotype plus an E or EM, and also be at/at
What is a PARTI labradoodle coat?

A Parti coloured dog has a coat that is at least 50% white with patches of any solid
colour

S locus alleles (or MITF gene) determine the degree and distribution of spotting.  Parti
dogs have a MITF gene that causes large patches with no colour.
What is a MERLE labradoodle coat?

A merle dog has a base coat of a solid colour with patches and mottled areas of other
colours.

A brindle has a pattern of dark and light striping in the fur.    There are black,
chocolate, red & silver brindles.

A mosaic coat has patches of colours.  It is not a colour variety carried by genes.  It is
rare and likely caused by a colour gene mutation.

K locus alleles determine the colouring pattern of a dog's coat.  M locus alleles
determine whether a dog expresses a merle pattern to its coat.

A brindle pattern will be expressed if the dog has one kbr allele and no KB allele.
What is a CHOCOLATE labradoodle coat?

Chocolate colors can stay rich and dark, or fade. They should always remain a chocolate
color ranging from a milk chocolate to dark chocolate shade.  True chocolates are born
almost black in color and maintain the rich dark color throughout their lifetime

All dogs with a “bb” pair and at least one “E” will be Brown:
bbEe and bbEE are brown dogs (with brown pigment):
bbEe is brown carrying recessive cream
bbEE is a brown dog
Shades of those basic colours are modified by other genes.
What is a APRICOT / GOLD labradoodle coat?

An apricot coloured dog has fur the colour of the inside of a peach and a black nose.
Many apricot coats will fade over time, and some will deepen in colour.  The colour
should be even throughout and the roots should not be lighter.  The difference
between apricot and caramel is apricot dogs have black noses and caramel dogs have
caramel noses.

All dogs with an “ee” pair will be Cream (cream means any of the following colors:
white, cream, apricot, red, yellow (as in Labs), golden (as in Goldens)
BBee is a cream dog
Bbee is a cream dog carrying recessive brown
bbee is a cream dog with brown pigment (caramel)
Shades of those basic colours are modified by other genes
What is a CARAMEL labradoodle coat?

Caramel should be the color of real caramel. The range of color can vary between gold
and red. Caramel coloured dogs need to have a
brown (known as liver or rose) nose.

The difference between apricot and caramel is apricot dogs have black noses and
caramel dogs have caramel noses.

What is a BLACK labradoodle coat?

Blacks should remain a solid, dark black color without fading or turning to silver. Some
blacks carry a recessive gene which prematurely grays the hair and they are called Silver.

All dogs with at least one “B” and at least one “E” will be Black:
BBEe, BBEE, BbEe, and BbEE are black dogs (with black pigment):
BBEe is black carrying recessive cream
BBEE is a black dog
BbEe is black carrying recessive cream and recessive brown
BbEE is black carrying recessive brown
What is a CHALK / WHITE labradoodle coat?

A chalk coloured dog has fur that appears to be pure white looking color. However, if
you were to compare it to a true white, it would appear to be more chalk-white in
color. Nose pigment can be either black or rose.  The colour is generally uniform over
the dog.

What is a SABLE labradoodle coat?

Sable labradoodle coats have coats represented by dark-tipped hairs on a background
of any solid colour, with no particular pattern/location designated for such hairs.
Sable is present through the entire body.  Phantom is just presented  on the face, legs
and under the tail.

Puppies that are "sable" start out as a darker colour but the roots are a lighter /
different colour, and slowly as the puppy gets older the roots become the actual
colour of the dog.  See photo below.  This is the same puppy.  You can see how the
colour changes over time.  Also see both photos of Georgia at left.

To be sable, All dogs must be kyky at the "K" locus and only 1 copy of ay at the "A"
locus. AY is a dominant gene therefore ay is dominant to at and aw.

What is a RED labradoodle coat?

A red coloured dog has fur the same colour as an Irish Setter and while some
highlighting may occur, the coat remains a deep red.

What is a CREAM labradoodle coat?

This color comes in a wide variety of shades but it should be creamy in appearance. It
can have tinting of gold/apricot. The nose pigment can be black or rose.

A cream coloured dog has fur that is darker than chalk dogs.  Ones with a deeper and
richer tone would be called golden coloured. Cream and gold dogs are not always
monotone.  Oftentimes, there are darker and lighter areas to their coat.

What is an Abstract marking on a labradoodle coat?

The term abstract refers to dogs with less than 50% white on any solid colour.  This
includes white patches on any or all of: feet, chest (tuxedos), chin (milk chin).

An abstract marked dog carries 1 parti gene.  A tuxedo marked dog carries 2 parti
genes.

S locus alleles (or MITF gene) determine the degree and distribution of spotting.
Parti dogs have a MITF gene that causes large patches with no colour.

What is a Tuxedo labradoodle coat?

A true tuxedo labradoodle will have very special markings in certain areas that
literally remind you of a tuxedo.  The term tuxedo labradoodle refers to parti
labradoodles (must carry 2 parti genes) with parti markings displayed with an entire
white belly and chest, and a solid dark back.

There will usually  be:
  • A white bib - this is color on the chest, it may or may not wrap all the way
    around the dog's neck
  • A white belly - This "should" touch the bib, making a continuous white area
  • White that extends from the belly down to the front and hind legs and paws.
  • A darker color that covers the entire saddle (back).

S locus alleles (or MITF gene) determine the degree and distribution of spotting.
